This post should have been made a few weeks ago but when ever i take photos it seems like it takes me forever to do anything with them.

Here is my first lino cut since i graduated. i have been wanting to get back into printing for a while now and a few weeks ago i finally bit the bullet and got a set up started. For my first home print i did a small postcard sized print and one a single color. the subject matter was kamen rider (surprise surprise).This was my first time printing at home which means i didn't get to use a press instead i used the wooden spoon method which worked surprisingly well. The ink that i got in the start up kit was water base easy clean up ink i have never used this ink before it was pretty crappy compared to oil based ink i used to. So i am definitely going to need to pick up some oil based ink before i do anymore prints

92: Street Fighter Ken vs Guile

well here it is as promised. work flow on this one was a little different..

i started by doing a pencil drawing. The funny thing was it was originally Zangief and Ken. As i worked i couldnt get Zangeif to look good and thought he didn't fit in the picture so i decided to replace him with Guile. so i taped a piece of paper over the old crappy Zangief and put in Guile.

From there i broke out tracing paper and inked on that after inking i broke out some more tracing paper and did the background then another piece for the crowd so i pretty much did layers like in photoshop but in the real world lol.

overall im pretty pleased with the end result

Influences and future growth

This post will go away from the normal pictures and little talking that this blog is known for instead I'm going to talk to you today about my influences. there are plenty and they are varied.

Paul Pope: Since i first saw one of his comics has been my favorite artist i don't even know how to explain it. to me it feels like his pictures were effortless like they were always there. I also am in love with his inks, he has a very nice balance of busy and calm.

Dan Hipp: I actually first saw Dan Hipps work when i graduated from high school i picked up a copy of the amazing joy buzzards. i dint really discover i'm again until last year i believe i was on ffffound.com and someone had posted one of his pieces up. From there i went to his website and feel in love. He always seems to have a great composition, but the main thing i love are his vivid colors they are to die for. if i could even have a fraction of his awesome fearless coloring ability i would feel blessed.

J.H. Williams III: was introduced to me by my friend Alex Mann when i first saw his work i didn't like it at all. A week or so later i came back to look at it and i liked it a little more. Another week pasted and i all of the sudden was in love and had to get my hands on it that was when he was making the first Batwoman. i enjoy his way of mixing styles and amazing page designs he is definitely one of the best comic book artist around.

Ghostco: is a resent person i started to follow i believe i found him through juxtapoz.com. I feel his inks are awesome i enjoy his muted tones when looking to his work it feels soft something that i don't feel I'm to good at but would love to learn how to do.

Roxie Vizcarra: I first found Roxie's art on deviant art by complete accident. I love her work because its loud and different. Her work reminders me of others but it also has its own strengths

D-pi: Has a great way of combining things he loves the two biggest seem to be hip-hop culture and ninjas. otherwise he has a nice use of line

my future plans are to become a lot better with my use of ink and to understand use of line better. i feel like to strength my voice i need to focus on the core or my work which i feel is the ink work.Other things i have been and will continue to work on is use of texture and color both these are really foreign to me for the longest time i was all about black and white pictures and stayed away from color. Even when i used color i didn't use it in any form that i would consider good. i feel that my colors weren't brave enough they were just local colors afraid to be neutral or vivid since then i have found artist that i feel are masters of color. the master( at least i think so) of vivd color would be Dan Hipp as i spoke about before. the master of neutrals is ashley wood.

A New Background and Another Tutorial

As promised here is a new background it is the current one on my mac if u like it but it doesn't fit your screen well I'm more then happy to make a resized one for you. Now onto the main part of this post the tutorial.

1. The first step in my process is to of course scan. I have a crappy HP scanner printer combo that I currently use hopefully I can get a better one soon. I scan pictures in on grayscale at about 300-600 dpi. From this point i start to refine the line art first by erasing then by using various adjustment modes. once i have finished refining i use the magic wand and highlight the line art. next i open a new layer and fill in the selected area with an absurd color this time it was a light blue.

2. This time i decided to go with a different method to reach the final piece. This time I decided not to use a greyscale, instead I opened a new layer and began to fill in the figure with one solid color to do this I used the point version of the lasso tool.Usually i use the color that will be used the most in the final piece

3.Next I take the solid color and star to divide it into the correct color for that area.i do all of this on a single layer when choosing the colors I try to either go warm or cool for this picture i went for mostly cool colors.

4.Once I have all the areas to the correct color I duplicate the layer. with the duplicate I adjust the colors using the light and contrast adjustment mode. I usually move the color or contrast up or down about 10-15 points. After I have a color difference I'm happy with I break out the point lasso tool again. This time I start to cut away the lighter or darker areas depending on if I'm going for light or shadow.

5. I created a texture for the background now this is the area where my original idea and final product differ. when I went to make the oval for the background originally I was planning on making it a bunch of dots that were big on the inside and shrank as they went out. In a new document I was playing around with dot patterns and ended up making this one I ended up really liking it even more then my original idea so I went with it

6. The next step was to make it colored. I did this by using the wand tool to select the pattern then i opened a new layer. In the new layer I did a circle gradient over the selected area so that it would have a fading effect. Once done I looked at the color I wanted a very hot pink but then found out this didn't look as good as I thought it would so tried to use different effects on the layer I end up using overlay

7. Then I went to finish the figure up by changing the line color from the absurd light blue to darker versions of the local colors. This was done with the point lasso tool and the paint brush.

8. The final thing I did was make the background, to create the background I first filled a layer in with a strong yellow. the next thing was to make a orange gradient coming up from the bottom one this was done i decided to add a texture to make it more interesting visually. i put the texture on a different layer and set it to softlight.

and then i was done at this point i looked it over and made small adjustments

So here is the tutorial i promised

i first started off with drawing it in my sketchbook then i inked it after scanning it i start to refine the ink

the next step i took was making a grey scale for the picture

next i created color i duplicated it to help keep the color working well the first set of colors i put the layer on overlay mode. the second set i put the layer on multiply

the next thing i did was change the line colors i decided to make them a dark shade of the color of the area

then i felt like i needed to make a background i decided to go for a basic stripe on i seem to like stripe backgrounds they aren't completely simple but they are not complex

then i made a texture in a new file i imported it in this was to add some more interest to the piece

after that i added an overlay of these bright colors to add a little more to it i turned the opacity so low that u barely can see it

and this was the end result

so i thought of this idea it was how to maybe cut down on how long a digital coloring could take the idea was to add all the vaules in before i color

Its been way to long....
so hope everything is good it is for me. Currently im getting ready for my adult job, working at batteries plus. For my final illustration we were asked to make stamps focused on the characters of golden age television i chose to do all western characters. First you have the lone ranger second cheyanne and last you have maverick after the full size pictures are the stamps

The next group of pictures is from studio seminar they are my senior project. The project was to illustrate a book i decided to do Animal Farm. For my illustrations i did portraits of the real person and there character in the book. i also did a cover that lacks the type but has boxes for the type location in a printed version the boxes wouldn't be there

well i was thinking about my senior show and thought i should do something big and exciting well I came to the idea that i was going to make a big 3d rellief version of my boxer piece
well I decided I would put up pictures of the planing stage
I will start by making it out of cardboard then it will be out of masonite its going to be 7 times bigger then the original

first I made a grid of 7 by 7 squares

and then i printed out the 1 in by 1in squares out 7 times bigger now i will be putting it all on the cardboard

Last friday i finished up my 9 color print, im so glad that im done with it lol ill put pics up of it soon

edit: i forgot to mention i made it into a show! lol its the rockhurst exchange they showed work here last semester and now its our turn to show our work there. the piece that got chosen was Samurai Junker i had put it in the citation show and i guess they liked it? so they stole it (kinda)i didnt really find out about it till they already took it lol. well all and all im really glad it really was a big surprise and makes me feel great.

im sorry the few viewers i do have i have been slacking off on my dutys to update well im going to try to change that sometime soon im going to do a super scanning section and scan in a years worth of skecthbook work that for some reason i havent scanned so some day soon my deviant page is going to get a flood of new art i will also be putting a hunk of it up here

but on other notes right now im working on a dnd illustration for class when im doen i will do a big post on reference mid work and the final piece

our first class assignment was a monochromatic double self portrait painted in acrylic i felt like it turned out ok could have been better but im not the most comfortable with monochromaic painting

for our second class assignment we are making a mural for the city of Warrensburg
we need to make a plan that would work as a proposal to the city we need to find out what we would use where we would have it put a amount and such

ok well lets get this started for a location i chose one right buy the city hall its a wall of a local shop
i would have the exact spot flattened out and smoothed before painting to make it easier then painting on brick i would use acrylic paint to paint my mural it being outside i feel like i would need to use something durable for paint i found this website

i decided i wanted to goof around alittle and try some things out that i was thinking about so here we good

this is a using all black line not colored bacock mentioned it so i thought i would see how it looked
this is taking away the color a friend told me he liked it more without color so i thought i would check it out and get ridd of the pinklast was a trying the last one out with black instead of a blue pattern

this class has been a very good class i have learned a lot and really enjoyed it
coming in i had a little knowledge about digital art
i would look at a piece and could tell its digital but i wouldn't have a clue on how to do it. after this class i have more knowledge about what i would i use and what tools to use

i think the format of the class was a good thing. Doing a master study then an interpretation really helped me learn the skills that i wanted. it helped me to learn from artist i like and to know how to do what they did

after this class i think i will now do more master studies in my free time because i now see how valuable it is to do them

final and reflection part 3

this is the image that i used for reference this time i was going to do another interpretation of my first project i will be using only photoshop
i started out by making a blackout of the image. i will be using this as a base
next i filled in the color sections with flat color using a solid brush
i then added some detail to the arms to break up the black

after the initial color i add in the smaller colors mainly thread and cloth

after this i started to build up the chest by adding in a middle color and a white this was to make highlights in the raise
in this step i added in green at a little less then 50% opacity this was to help break down the solid colors
next i added in some bright white on the face and the sode(shoulder pad)
last i added in dark shadows to make the whole thing more 3d
im not finished and wont finish it before class is through but i plan to keep working on this and learn more in the following weeks i plan to finish this up and post progress

after im done with this i will move to making another interpretation of my last project i will probably do master studies so that i can learn more and do a better interpretation of it this time

final and reflection part 2

my first step was getting a picture i own a book that is full of people dressed as samurai and other feudal Japanese clothes its a great reference book and i thought i could use it for a base for this finally instead of sketches
so i scaned the picture in and opened it in illustrator
once in illustrator locked the layer and opened a new layer for the line art. i used the blob brush to do the line work after useing the blob brush multipull times it has probably became one of my favorite tools i turned the variation up alittle. after i drew it out i broke some of the lines and started to make them different colors

once i was done with the line work i moved it over to photoshop i started by locking the line aart layer then i added in a pink background on a seperate layer and lock that layer too. from there i opened a 3rd layer and named it color here i layered in flat color for the base of the illustration
after this i opened up a new layer and filled the layer with a color i think it was orange from there i went to filter and clicked on pixelate then color halftone i chose 8 from there i went to channels and got rid of the blue and red channels and chose the green channel and the dots it left from here i made a pattern out of it then i filled a new layer with the pattern and turned the channels back on. i did this again but this time i kept the blue dots they were bigger
after this i made another layer i used the halftone pattern filter it is under the sketch filters i used horizontal lines
once all 3 of these layer were made i started to change which ones u saw where and played around with them creating textures
sadly i forgot to save pics of these steps after this i merged the 3 layers together and started to erase to create highlights this was a new idea i thought of and decided to try

once i was done with the pattern i decided i want to finish it up with making a shadow the way i went about this was by coping the layer then putting it in multiply and then using the skew function under transform i skewed the new one that was on top after skewing it to the way i wanted i locked it

then last thing i did was create a Moire pattern this is kinda hard to explain easier to watch heres the tutorial babcock did for it http://ucmconnect.ucmo.edu/p31089225/ (its the same as the one for dot patterns) once i made the two layers i moved them around and skewed them till i was happy with the effect from there i opened the skewed layer i made before and started to erase the shadow image out this took awhile because i didnt want to screw up
there is probably a better faster way but that ok im happy with the result

overall im very happy with this piece and feel i learned alot from doing the master study and two interpriations from this point i want to expariment more im really starting to like the pattens and how they can add texture

FINal and reflection part 1

For my final and refletion i decided to go back and redo my interpretations but because of needing to move this last week and other things coming up i only got 3 of the 4 done but im still happy with what i got done i will post a post for each of the interitation tutorials hope these are informative to what i did and how i did them any questions or comments would be greatly apprieciated

the first thing i did was get a image i like normally it would be a sketch or other line art i liked but for times sake and for an experiment i decided i would use pictures from a samurai reference book

the first thing i did was open the picture in illustrator and use the blob brush to make line art of the pic i used the blob brushes variation to make the lines have a little character i still think i could have pushed this a little more but i will try experiments like those in the future
after i have the line art done i move it to photoshop i start by putting a flat color in for a background i chose green to offset the pink i was planing to use. once i had the background in i opened a new layer and colored the image i used pretty flat color like paul pope did in the piece i made a master study ofand lastly i added a layer over the last one which had a see though look to it to help create the effect of a semi transparent garment i used the brush tool at 30% and went over it a few times

overall im happy with what i learned this is a nice way t make a sketch or simple drawing more appealing its a pretty simple and fast way to color once u get use to it
